GIBCA 2025

Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (GIBCA) is an international contemporary art event taking place every two years in Gothenburg. Each biennial consists of several extensive exhibitions in Gothenburg’s established cultural institutions and in the public space.

GIBCA Extended is both a network and a public program that gathers the contemporary art scenes and venues of Västra Götaland Region. Each edition of GIBCA Extended offers a platform for artists, curators, galleries and art spaces. Their individual programs and exhibitions consolidate and explore new perspectives on the biennal’s theme.

WHOSE SQUARE?

For the third year, actors in Högsbo are collaborating with GIBCA Extended. This year, works are being shown at Högsbo Library and Högsbo Church. The artists are Marko Cesarec, Lars Embäck, Anne Marte Overaa and Gunnar Sandin. Through site-specific works that activate the square, library and church rooms in Högsbo, the artists address themes such as desire, diaspora and spatial diversity in a Swedish district and its everyday gathering places. The spiritual spaces, libraries, gathering places and trading places are dependent on each other as representatives of a tradition that stretches back thousands of years. How can we relate to the city’s appearance, offerings and functions today and who has access to and influence over the collective gathering places?

VEMS TORG?

För tredje året samverkar aktörer i Högsbo med GIBCA Extended. I år visas verk på Högsbo bibliotek och Högsbo kyrka. Konstnärer är Marko Cesarec, Lars Embäck, Anne Marte Overaa och Gunnar Sandin. Genom platsspecifika verk som aktiverar torgplats, bibliotek och kyrkorum i Högsbo tar konstnärerna sig an teman som begär, diaspora och rumslig mångfald i en svensk stadsdel och dess vardagliga samlingsplatser. De andliga rummen, bibliotek, samlingslokaler och handelsplatser är beroende av varandra som representanter för en tradition som sträcker sig tusentals år tillbaka i tiden. Hur kan vi förhålla oss till stadens utseende, erbjudanden och funktioner idag och vem är det som har tillgång till och inflytande över de kollektiva samlingsplatserna?
